In one case, Gary Pride, who runs a small design firm in Bradford, was charged over £54,000 (excluding VAT) for five desk phones and software devices he estimated were worth just a few hundred pounds each. He signed what he believed was a standard contract, only to discover he’d entered a 10-year finance lease that he couldn’t exit without paying nearly £25,000 in penalties.

Another business owner, Paul Toplass, unknowingly signed into a 7-year finance deal for basic equipment worth less than £200 per unit. Like many others, he was led to believe he was signing a short-term service agreement.

These cases are not isolated. The BBC found more than 160 small businesses caught in similar traps, often through aggressive sales tactics and unclear third-party finance arrangements.
